Garmisch-Partenkirchen: Übernachten am Fuß der Zugspitze
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the classic German Alpine holiday: the Zugspitze above, the Lüftlmalerei-painted facades of the pedestrian zone below, and in between the ski jump, the spa gardens and the wild Partnach Gorge. Hardly anywhere else packs winter sports and summer mountaineering into such a small space.
The lodgings spread across both halves of the town: quieter Partenkirchen has the traditional inns, Garmisch the larger houses such as the Hotel-Restaurant Richter or Almenrausch und Edelweiß. In between, countless families let holiday flats and guest rooms – from the Gästehaus Schönanger to the Tiroler Alpblick Apartements facing the Wetterstein massif.
The Eibsee, Ettal Abbey, Linderhof Palace and the Passion Play town of Oberammergau all lie within half an hour. Booking directly with the host means no commission – and first-hand advice on whether tomorrow's better weather window belongs to the Alpspitze cable car or the hike through the gorge.
