Wernigerode: die bunte Stadt am Harz
Wernigerode owes its nickname "the colourful town of the Harz" to its painted half-timbered facades, above which the fairy-tale castle crowns its rocky spur. From the market square with the famous town hall, the Harzquerbahn steams off towards the Brocken – nostalgia included.
Guests like to stay historically: the Hotel Alte Brennerei and the Pfälzer Hof reside in listed buildings, while the Hotel am Schlosspark scores with its castle view. It gets more personal in guesthouses like the Villa HarzFokus or right by the town wall; in the Schierke district – the gateway to the Brocken – houses like the Waldperle await hikers and winter-sports fans.
Beyond castle and Brocken railway, the aviation museum and the old-town lanes with the Smallest House reward a visit. Ask the host directly and you pay no agency commission – and learn on which mid-morning the castle terraces are still quiet.
