The Erzgebirge is the home of Germany's Christmas mountain: candle arches, incense smokers and nutcrackers come from its carving workshops, and in Advent the miners' parades turn the towns into glowing stages of light. But the mining region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019, has the other seasons too: the Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal, at a good 1,200 metres the highest mountain in eastern Germany, is a ski area in winter and hiking and biking country in summer.
