Bayerischer Wald: Urwald, Glaskunst und der Große Arber
Together with the Bohemian Forest, the Bavarian Forest forms the largest continuous stretch of woodland in Central Europe – and contains Germany's oldest national park, where since 1970 the forest has been allowed to become wilderness again. Above it all rises the Großer Arber, "king of the Bavarian Forest": a ski mountain in winter, a viewing platform reaching to the Alps in summer.
The villages in between live from glass and hospitality: in Bodenmais you might stay at the Hotel Hubertus near the glassworks, Zwiesel – home of the glassmaking school – offers houses like the Hotel Bavaria, in Sankt Englmar the Buglhof keeps the farm-holiday tradition alive, and in Lam below the Osser the BayVista welcomes hikers and families.
The treetop walk and animal enclosure at Neuschönau, the Glass Forest, Lake Arbersee and the cross-country trails of the Bretterschachten belong on every list. Listings on GastNest are booked directly with the host – commission-free, with the local knowledge of which forest path offers the best chance of a lynx track.
