Füssen is the gateway to the royal castles: Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are only minutes away, yet the town itself is often underrated – with its baroque old town, the High Castle and the turquoise Lechfall waterfall it deserves more than a stopover.

Those who stay find quarters for every taste: the boutique Blaue Burg and the Landhaus Kössel serve refined expectations, the Seehotel Weissensee tempts with its spot on the quiet mountain lake. You stay more cheaply in guesthouses like the B&B Schöberl or in flats like the Jägerhof – and most cosily in the Ferienhäusle Beim Sima.

Beyond the castles there are Forggensee boat trips, the Wieskirche pilgrimage church and the treetop walk at the forest adventure centre.
